I think that male pathologies are really coming to the cultural foreground and not in the kind of live boys don't cry men need therapy kind of way but you know there's a lot of writing about the suburbs specifically how like housewives are super isolated. This character of Cal seems important because we're seeing the patriarch head of household experiencing like loneliness sacrifice spiraling out feeling really unfulfilled. The ultimate villains of the show are Nate and his dad and that does it is an accurate portrayal of how dark and deep that kind of pathology and anguish can get.
