The Mona Lisa

Vincenzo Parugia stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1963. He was a low-level employee at the museum who acted alone. The Italian government agreed to return the painting, but they did so in a very roundabout way. In 1962 and 1963, the painting was on loan in the U.S., where it was valued at over $100 million for insurance purposes,. It is estimated that the MonaLisa would have a value of over $2.5 billion at auction today.
