Jan huss was condemned to death for preaching in the native check language, rather than latin. The executioners stripped him down to his shirt sleeves, chained and roped him to a stake. He knelt down and prayed, have mercy on me. O god, in you, o lord, do i put my trust witnesses? But luther knew that emperors had promised safe conduct before. It had been promised by emperor maximilian a hundred years previously to a priest and professor by the name of jan huss. And huss had made the mistake of trusting him.
