Writers never have reputations from being good people. Hardly ever. They're troubled people. That's why when people want to cancel a writer based on their biographical instances, it's like well cancel everybody then. Apart from Shakespeare, Austin and Chekhov there aren't that many writers who are good people. We know Austin was good. She's one of the good trio of writers. But she said that this protagonist was almost too good for her. Why? Because she lets a lot slide firstly because she does listen to other people When any character talks to another character in persuasion you know they're not really listening. There is a dramatic irony in that we are learning ourselves
