The Nobility of the Sword - The Signeur Audience

The army had never been a great avenue for commoners to rise up through the ranks of french society. It could be argued that, in an effort to insure the military was operating most effect y, the nobility of the sword were excluding amateur nobles from positions of command. Some members of the third estate actually found it easier to enter the officer corps. Sons of non aristocratic officers were exempted from the four generation noble blood requirement,. provided their father had won the cross of saint louis. These reforms happened almost immediately after necker's dismissal.
