He believes himself to be unlovable and that's completely understandable because we learn that he was born to a 22 year old prostitute who died giving birth to him. So it surprised me massively that he came close, if not did, find love in Rachel. She's another outsider in the sense that she's Jewish, which can't have been that comfortable in the 50s and 60s. There was still a lot of anti-Semitism around. In fact, there's again, they're so awful and yet funny that when she comes in as a client and they're running around the whole building trying to find somebody Jewish working there to show that they're not anti-Semitic,.
