Gale's dad is just giddy Lee smiling, you know, he's giddy at the ceremony. I didn't see that at one point in the episode. She actually hands instructor, Soren Kale's book of folding, which is the heretical teachings, and they're going to be the weights that actually bring him down to the surface. So they are essentially cleansing themselves of knowledge. In a way, this is like a Fahrenheit 451 scenario where the books are being burned.
