Rutherford B Hayes Wins the Presidential Election

Reconstruction officially ended in 1877 with something called the Compromise of 1877 or the Great Betrayal. Democrats had already taken back many southern state governments by the 1876 presidential election. The presidency threw a vote by the electoral commission in exchange for Hayeses. For Hayeses representatives agreeing to recognize democratic control of the entire south and to avoid further intervention in local affairs while Democrats agreed not to dispute Hayeses right to the presidency.
