What Was the Overriding Symbol in 1978?
Inflation and pay demands were the overriding symbol in 19 78. The labor government, under jim callahan, was trying to impose its fourth year of pay restraint. Now er workers just were not prepared to put up with it. And by september of 78, all hell was being let loose. So th first out of the trap were the ford car workers. They went on to get a 17 % pa increase. But these massive increases for powerful workers were just a spur to the low paid workers. This is why when you hear quasi quarting say in the commons, we're not going back to the winter of discontent, he really is hoping that they won't go back
