The Need for Charisma in Modern Times
The need for charisma has grown in modern times because there's this big bureaucracy that's difficult to wrangle. Weber worries a lot about bureaucrats because they don't have responsibility or conviction. In the late Roman Republic you get these armies under very charismatic generals taking the state and threatening to take the state. The Caesar figure is the one who can break through that institutional deadlock and solve the problem.
