The Asiatic Mode of Production
The Asiatic mode of production is controversial for many different reasons. Stalinism eradicated it from Marxist thought in the late 1920s, early 1930s. The state extracted surplus labor or surplus from the communes in order to carry out these tasks. And Marx talked about generalized slavery. He didn't mean slavery as we understand it, but he meant that basically all the agriculture communes were enslaved by this state structure on top.
