John Philip Law was an old hand. He'd been in numerous movies, for example, in a sci-fi hit called Bar-Bar-Rella back in 1968. The influence of local gangsters was a problem. Another problem was the height of Mel Gibson compared to John Philip Law. So not, you know, hobbit sized by any means, but yeah, the difference between those two meant Mel Gibson had to stand on a box.
