The Minimal Definition of Democracy by Schumpeter
Schumpeter's definition of democracy provides the substance for some important distinctions between different kinds of politics. Democracy must involve genuine competition, or, to put it in slightly more democratic language, genuine choice. And that second version, chumpeter says, is not democracy. This argument still resonates to day.
