The Crimean Tatars and the Ukrainian Cossack State
In 1699 the Ottomans sign a treaty as a defeated power. The Crimean Tatars are now, they've now basically hitched to the Ottoman. They're hitched at a moment when the Ottoman power has been driven southward. Now that changes everything for the Russians as we're going to see in a moment. There is something like Ukrainian statehood - it's called the Hetmenet after the Hetman. But the HetMenet is constantly bending and turning and being turned against itself.
