Doom and the Clock Tower
I wonder if there's some similar sensation in having a medieval clock tower keeping time where it's just in the background. You know it will make a noise and you don't really have to think about it. There are many features of modern life that cannot operate, cannot run, cannot work at all,. would not be safe to operate apart from the precision of clock time. I always am a little hesitant as ill as to us to not come off as a romantic about... techno social configuration.
