Andrew Johnson's Pardon of Robert E. Lee

In 1865, Andrew Johnson had no intention of pardoning Robert E. Lee in 1865. Now he did eventually pardon those Confederates who had been indicted in a general pardon in December 1868. In 1975, Congress decided to take care of the disability that still existed under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment and restore his citizenship. The last remaining disability was struck down in 1898, but Lee had been deceased.
