Introduction
Dr. Alexis A.C. Gomez is a second-year MedPeds Nephrology Fellow at Mass General Brigham and Boston Children's Hospital. She loves all things kidney-related, especially at the medical student level. The risks we think of from the hyponatremia itself are cerebriladema, which in extreme cases can lead to herniation and seizures. If someone comes in with a very low sodium and relatively fewer no symptoms, you should have a higher suspicion that this is chronic. You'll want to give them a bolusic, meaning 3% saline over roughly 10 minutes.
