The Marabou in Senegal
The character of Omar is based on a figure common to Senegalese Sufism. The Marabou has students underneath them who are supposed to give their children to the talibé for Muslim education and just general education too. But unlike the Talibé, the Marabou specifically promises to the talIBé's family that they will give them protection, security and they'll help facilitate their way into paradise. Which are all things that Shaka says or Mar promised the child soldiers.
