The Virginian by Owen Wister

1902 with a novel called the virginian written by Owen Wister who was a lawyer from philadelphia and also a personal friend of teddy rosavelt. The novel centers on an unnamed cowboy we only know him as the virginian who oversees a ranch in Wyoming. This man has an enemy who is a gambler right a ruffian a ne'er-du-well a dangerous figure with whom the main character fights a duel. After winning this duel he then also wins the heart of the blushing school marm in town and takes her off to mary so the virginian sets down certain major new conventions that become really cliches of the western.
