The Sino-Soviet Split

Krushchev and Mao will have a particularly fraught relationship, even when the new Soviet leader had initially tried to be so welcoming. There's an often recalled example of Mao literally flexing on the Soviet leader as they met in China to discuss important matters. The Sino-Soviet split has an impact, even at this early point, on the Great Leap. As I mentioned before, that whole ramping up of the Great Leap forward was in part done to pay off debts quicker than originally planned.
