The Importance of Empathy in Therapy

There's an inference that the parent is expressing or experiencing a worry about their kid. So later, the parent says, it's like she doesn't care. And the therapist says, you do care though and aren't willing to give up on her. The empathic statements go beyond what the client is expressing. Now, I've heard Carl Rogers talk about this a bit too. But explain how this inferential process works.
