The Debate on Population Policy in Britain
A government is not then in control and cannot have what Tony Wright called a population policy. It cannot judge what level of population combines the need for economic growth with a judgment on whether public services, which are always creaking at best in Britain. So these are complex matters that involve a grown up debate to resolve. The newspapers here with their hysteria on the front pages makes it much more difficult. But as I say, those who argue as I do that the free movement has been one of the lack of it, has been at a huge cost to Britain. Got to get them down. We need vast numbers coming over here more than ever"
