mahandas carumchan gandy was born on october second 18 69 in porbanda, a port on the arabian sea in what is now guderat state. He was born into a reasonably wealthy family, from one of the higher indian social classes or castes. His father was the area's chief minister, and his mother, his father's fourth wife, was an utterly devout hindo.
