In his new book Empire of Law, Julian Zelizer argues that the key to wealth creation lies in legal code. He says capital assets are certain types of assets that have attributes that other objects or ideas don't have. These include: priority, durability, universality and convertibility. In times of crisis, financial assets can be converted into safer ones by people who want to protect their nominal value.
