The word Ukraine is sometimes translated in Russian as being the borderlands or to the edge. For the Russian psyche, it's often been seen as a buffer between Russia and the West. By the time Putin and next Crimea, there was not a single American tank in Europe. NATO was a paper tiger. Everybody knew it. But exactly because NATO looks so weak, and Obama was willing to make a deal. Then, of course, I don't know if I mentioned Trump, Putin decided that he could do whatever.
