Some dresdeners were surprisingly lucid during this ordeal. One wounded german soldier was lying in a bed in the basement of a cellar, calmly awaiting the death he knew was inevitable. He used the time to write one last letter to his wife: These are probably the last words and thoughts i shall ever write to you.
