The death of 14 portuguese sailors gave the jesuits leverage over their mercantile counterparts. The order could use this as leverage to direct the merchants to harbors friendly to their cause. This gave the order power over both the merchants who wanted somewhere safe, and other local war lords who wanted access to the trade that was currently reaching hirado.
