Part of the idea of that sort of augmented reality display is that you don't have to look away from where you're going in order to get informations. It's very much like a head up display that's used by pilots and in airplanes. Just because your eyes are directed at something doesn't mean that your mind is. Your attention could very well be on the augmentation and not on reality. That was one of the weirdest parts of the book to me, as the idea that an an experienced pilot would be less likely, pera, to see a plane on the runway than some one who may have not landed as many times.
