Frederick bruce thomas was a very influential social figure in the twilight of the ottoban empire, and was well known among many people. Why was he forgotten? Americans were not interested in preserving memory of successful black people. He expatriated himself from the united states in 18 94, never came back home. And then by following one strand after another, i was able to reconstruct his life fully enough to write his biography. The russian empire collapsed as we know; there was no interest among the new soviet overlords to preserve figures from the world of popular entertainment. In 19 23, the turks began to swing away from this kind of indulgent treatment
