D. G. Hart: The rise of a theological movement known as the social gospel is an important background to Machen's Christianity and liberalism. He says pilotism sought to modify the Reformation by forming what they called Conventicles or little churches in the church. "The heart of pilotism is a quest for an immediate encounter with the Re risen Christ," he says.
