The 1950s is a turning point for the way that Muslims started to imagine themselves in the region they were in. Modernity as a narrative starts to become quite prevalent, both in regards to what the Americans are saying, but even as a response to that. What you see for Muslims at this time is they become detached from the generations of people that may have been part of the Ottoman past.
