The need for an explanation would apply to multiple things, rather than just individual things. This is because we never find any kind of chaos of contingent things existing without an explanation. And so i'm thinking a cause will be any sort of condition that can play some role in explaining the effects. But it's not clear to me that if we're talking about causation a, the same problem occurs.
