Machiavelli and the Popolo
Machiavelli seems to have wanted a more genuinely democratic form of republicanism. Like guijardini, h has faith in the decision making powers of the popolo. They sometimes make mistakes, but so do princes. And an unlawful prince is even worse than a deluded populace. According to this sentence, liberty comes from the productive rivalry of both the people and the great.
