Polykarp of Smyrna
According to tradition, Polykarp of Smyrna was a student of John the Apostle. He traveled to Rome at one point in the mid-second century to hold a conference with the bishop of Rome on the subject of Easter. The Epistle to the Philippians is an interesting glance at how the documents that make up the New Testament had percolated throughout the bishops during this very early period.
