President Ghani was very effective in lobbying in Washington. He had many friends in various parts of the city. So there was some reluctance to put that kind of pressure on him. I feel for Afghanistan. After all, I was born there. And I have spent a lot of my life on behalf of the United States focused on Afghanistan. But unfortunately, the political elite of the country made terrible mistakes,. allowed corruption, misused elections, democracy. They didn't treat their security forces perhaps the way they should have been treated.
