If your Wi-Fi extends further than the walls of the building, then you have to have physical security. This is not like a completely unknown issue to enterprises. The range will change depending on the weather. It's entirely possible that the attacker first did the drone attack on the employee's home in order to steal the corrective VPN credentials from the actual building. We don't know that for certain.
