Cinemascope
Cinemascope was a process that was developed by 20th Century Fox to counteract the effect of television. It was a process of squeezing the image onto the frame and then unsqueezing it in projection. This new technology was game-changing, and today almost everything we watch is in widescreen. We refuse to settle for something secondary or something somebody claims is almost as good as Cinemascope.
