History of the Roma ("Gypsies"), part 1 -- From Ancient Origins to the Eighteenth Century
Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
The Tot, a Tribal Caste of Merchants, Musicians, and Animal Handlers
The poem claims that a specific group devoted to music migrated out of india into persia in roughly speaking, the right sort of time frame. And so this may be a clue as to how some group of indian descent ended up migrating further west, towards europe. It's possible that some descendants of the original roma became the group called the tot - merchants, musicians, mercenaries, guards and animal handlers who were reportedly sent to antioch. But it's not clear if if the tot are ancestors of the roma. The zot might have been the ancestors of the people called dam in the middle east, who are a separate, distinct group speaking a language called domari.
