The Ionian Revolt of 499 BC

Erstagoras was able to persuade the Ionian Greeks to revolt easily, because most were not happy being subjects anyway. Erstagoras sent men to capture all of the Greek tyrants present in the army and then handed them over to their respective cities. And all poleis along the coast began to overthrow their satraps and establish Isonomia, or democracies. Most fell without bloodshed, but the tyrant of Mitoleen, a man named Chios, was so unpopular that he was stoned to death. Those tyrants who escaped with their lives fled to the security of Sardis, and an enraged Art of Faranese.
