Damage: A Movie With Sex Scenes That Made Money
Last Tango had become shorthand for a movie with sex scenes that made money. But recapturing its success was not really about graphic sex. In order to strike the zeitgeist, you had to make a film that had something to say about sex in the moment it was released. Mal Verhoeven's Damage was originally handed an NC-17 rating and though this was changed to an R, after Mal agreed to cut just a few seconds, the film's ratings battle became a talking point. There were some critics who saw in Damage what Mal wanted them to see.
