Aquinas and the Passions
For Aquinas, the passions are movements of the sense appetite in response to an object apprehended as good or evil with a corresponding bodily change. The term passion reflects this for the word implies that passions are passive in a sense. In the sense that they need to be awakened by something external to them. What we apprehend then activates our passion; you cannot love what you do not know.
