Pompeii is preserved to, let's call it five meters for five meters. The depth of cover in herculenum is a minimum of 12 metres. That's what enables second floors to survive. It's in herculaneum that you understand just how important those upper floors were. You can actually see these things in herculanium. You have to posit them in pompey.
