Fastening Your Eyes on You
The man asks in alms and then Peter sees him. And more than see him, he really looks. Can you picture that? That's, this sounds like a stare down. It happens often with little children and parents that are trying to have some kind of compassion. The man feeling uncomfortable, perhaps feeling judged either because I'm a freak or because you think I'm a sinner who deserves this, he looks away. But that's not what Peter's doing. So he calls the man's gaze back to him, look on us. This is more than mere curiosity. This is compassion. There was a homeless man that always asked for alms across the street from the Vanderbilt Divinity
