There's nothing we can do to save those who were enslaved and treated abominably by English or Scottish sailors in the 1700s. But there was an awful lot of injustice about it. We can't undo the injustices done to small kids set up chimney stacks. All we can do is stop it and try and rectify the effects now. And we're still doing that. The empire was involved in anti-slavery for 150 years all over. Now, does that compensate for 150 years of slavery? Well, no. But what's done is done. And so there's nothing to compensate.
