The Dutch East India Company and the Coffee Trade
Up until about the 1700s, all of the coffee that's coming onto the market comes from Mocha. The Dutch East India Company is seeing an expansion in demand. And as a result, one of their governors decides to try and plant coffee in Java. By around 1711, they are shipping coffee back into Amsterdam. by the end of the 1720s, about 90% of the coffee going through the Amsterdam exchange is now from Java.
