The Differences Between Insect Brain and Mammalian Brain

Structurally they're very, very different. You can't look at a structure in the insect brain and go, oh, that's the analogy of the hippocampus for example. It doesn't work that way. However, if we look at the level of the individual neurons and how the individual neurons work, there we tell a story of more similarities than differences. The kinds of connective motifs and the mechanisms of plasticity and flexibility are where we see a lot of similarities between an insect brain and a vertebrate brain.
