At 19, still working in restaurants, Gordon was persuaded to attend North Oxfordshire Technical College on a scholarship. I wonder if a young Brit in the 1980s would have seen cooking as a means of upward mobility. If you're a poor nobody and you want to brush shoulders with rich somebody's, then your best bet is luxury domestic work. Rich people generally don't hire other rich people to serve their meals because rich people don't want to do that kind of work. Only poor people want those kinds of jobs, and even they don't really want those jobs, they just need those jobs.
