The Importance of Mercy in Infidelity Counseling
Bob Greene: We have almost polar extremes usually in an infidelity counseling situation where what might be called blind forgiveness. And it's usually couched as this virtuous thing, but it actually dismisses the right judgment of it. He says if a couple gets stuck and says, I'm not going to forgive you that what you've done is unforgivable, then the mercy is cheap at that point. Greene: But when the judgment is false, then there's no mercy. You are always an adulterer and the scarlet letter goes on symbolically and nothing can be restored.
