The History of Puperal Fever in Hospitals

Hospitals were often used as training grounds for future physicians. This meant that a pregnant person would often be subjected to repeated vaginal exams. The first described epidemic of puperal fever happened in Paris in either 1646 or 1746. In London, between 1831 and 1843, 10 mothers per 10,000 died at home while 600 each gave birth in the hospital.
