Goffman's theory that there is no boundary between how you behave in public and how you behave in private is fairly diagnostic for mental illness. And i'm certainly american enough to be horrified at the extreme versions of all this. When viewed from loose cultures, the stakes are just non obvious. What's wrong with swearing, or saying something inappropriate, or not being polite, when you know you don't view yourself in those terms? But is it?
